Get started with Ledger™

A colorful, friendly 1500-word guide to setting up your Ledger hardware wallet, installing Ledger Live, securing your recovery phrase, and sending/receiving crypto safely.

What you’ll need

Before we begin, gather these items so setup is smooth and secure.

  • A Ledger hardware wallet (Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, or supported model).
  • A computer or mobile device with an updated browser or Bluetooth for Nano X.
  • The included USB cable (or Bluetooth pairing tools) and a stable internet connection.
  • A safe place to write your 24-word recovery phrase — the supplied recovery card or a steel backup.

Download Ledger Live from Ledger.com/start only. We repeat: use Ledger.com/start for official downloads and instructions.

Unboxing & initial checks

  1. Inspect packaging for tampering. Keep the box until setup completes.
  2. Confirm accessories: device, USB cable, recovery card, quick start guide.
  3. If anything looks suspicious, contact support and don’t use the device.

You can always return to the official setup guide at Ledger.com/start.

Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official app to manage your wallets, firmware, and apps on-device.

  1. Visit Ledger.com/start and select your device model.
  2. Download Ledger Live (desktop or mobile) and run the installer.
  3. Open Ledger Live and follow the prompts to set up a new device or restore one.

If Ledger Live prompts firmware updates, follow them — updates are signed and distributed via the official app.

Initialize your device

  1. Power the device and choose Set up as new device or Restore.
  2. Create a PIN on-device — choose something memorable but not guessable.
  3. Write down the 24-word recovery phrase exactly, in order, on the supplied card. Do not copy digitally.
  4. Confirm the words when prompted by the device to verify accuracy.

The recovery phrase is your master key. Anyone with it can access your funds. Keep it offline and secure. Learn more at Ledger.com/start.

Add accounts & install apps

Ledger devices install small blockchain-specific apps (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) that let the device sign transactions on those networks.

  1. Open Ledger Live > Manager, connect and unlock your device.
  2. Find and install the app for your chosen currency. Approve installation on-device.
  3. Go to Accounts > Add account > select the currency and synchronize addresses.

Receiving and sending crypto

  1. To receive: In Ledger Live choose an account > Receive. Verify the address on your device and approve.
  2. To send: Click Send, enter recipient and amount, verify details, and approve the transaction on-device.
  3. Always start with a small test amount.

Security best practices

  • Never share your 24-word seed. Ledger support will never ask for it.
  • Store your seed offline — paper or metal backups are best.
  • Consider a passphrase only if you understand its recovery implications.
  • Keep Ledger Live and device firmware updated through Ledger.com/start.

Troubleshooting

  • Device not recognized? Try another USB cable/port. Some cables are power-only.
  • On mobile, check Bluetooth and pairing permissions for Nano X.
  • Reinstall Ledger Live if issues persist and verify you downloaded it from Ledger.com/start.

Advanced tips

  • Use a steel backup for the seed to protect against fire and water damage.
  • Split large holdings across multiple wallets for risk management.
  • Review transactions on-device before approving when using dApps.
